At the 2023 Oscars, Hugh Grant was successful in creating a stir.
The actor made a rather self-deprecating quip next to his “Four Weddings and a Funeral” co-star while taking the stage with Andie MacDowell to present the award for best production design. Really, we’re here to do two things, he said.
“The first is to spread the word about how crucial it is to use a quality moisturizer. For the past 29 years, Andie has wore one every day. Never in my life have I used one.” About three decades after the film’s debut, he remarked that MacDowell was “still magnificent,” adding, “I’m just a scrotum.”
Grant and MacDowell’s reunion followed an earlier televised moment that many on social media dubbed awkward. While on the red carpet, Grant was interviewed by Ashley Graham, who asked him his favourite thing about the Oscars. “Well, it’s fascinating. The whole of humanity is here. It’s Vanity Fair,” he said.
“Oh, it’s all about Vanity Fair. That’s when we let loose and have a bit of fun,” Graham responded, referencing Vanity Fair’s annual star-studded Oscars afterparty. However, many people online have theorised that Grant was actually referencing William Makepeace Thackeray’s 1948 novel that satirises the shallowness of upper-class British life.
