Elton John was overcome with affection on Monday evening. Upon receiving an Emmy Award in the Outstanding Variety Special (Live) category for his concert film Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium, the 76-year-old singer formally attained EGOT status.
Individuals who have received a minimum of one award from each of the four major American entertainment awards—Emmys, Grammys, Oscars, and Tonys—are referred to as EGOTs. The acclaimed British performer attains the title for the nineteenth time.
“Honored to be among the esteemed group of EGOT winners.”
The “Rocket Man” singer, who recently endured knee surgery, was unable to attend the 75th Emmy Awards, which were hosted at the Peacock Theatre at L.A. Live in Los Angeles, for his momentous occasion. “Honored to have joined the hallowed ranks of EGOT winners,” John, who served as the executive producer of his special, wrote in a social media post in response to the accomplishment. He added, “Here’s to the joy of music and the magic it brings into our lives!”
Before the envelope was unsealed, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, who revived Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update” to announce the category, noted that John was nominated for an EGOT. Poehler remarked, “I cannot speak for Elton, but he has every reason to be thrilled about that.”
Backstage after the award was presented, Furnish revealed that he “awoke him in the middle of the night” while FaceTimeing John in England, where he is recuperating.
“He shrieked aloud,” he says of John, the father of two of his own. “He responded, ‘YES!'” Extremely pleased. Exceptionally delighted. He continued, “I am fortunate to be surrounded by individuals of your caliber and renown.”
