On Wednesday, House Republicans finally started their long-promised investigation into President Joe Biden and his family. They did this by pressing for evidence from the Treasury Department and former Twitter executives while laying the groundwork for open hearings.
Rep. James Comer, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, said in a statement that oversight and accountability now follow that Democrats do not have one-party dominance in Washington.
The Treasury Department was contacted by the Republican-led committee in a series of emails requesting for financial data regarding financial transactions by members of the Biden family that were deemed suspicious. These reports, which the government receives automatically after significant financial transactions, are regular and do not indicate crime.
Lawmakers also solicited testimony from several former Twitter executives involved in the company’s editing of an October 2020 New York Post story about Hunter Biden, the president’s younger son. Republicans say the story was suppressed for political reasons.
Having seized control of the House, Republicans are quickly preparing a chaotic, politically explosive showdown with the White House that could delve deep into the affairs of the President’s family and shape the contours of the 2024 White House race.
“In their first week as a majority in government, House Republicans failed to take meaningful action to address inflation and bring down the costs of Americans, and yet they are jumping out the gate with political stunts pushed by their faction’s most extreme MAGA members will be an attempt to draw attention to Fox News,” White House spokesman Ian Sams said in a statement, referring to former President Donald Trump’s campaign slogan, “Make America Great Again.”
