Lucas had pushed Nicole out of the way just prior to the collision. Potentially endangering his own life in the process, Lucas took the brunt of the blow as a result. Loudon County Deputy Matt Fagiana, a close friend of the couple revealed.
Fagiana said, “Let’s start praying for our buddy. If anyone is deserving of a second chance at life, it’s this guy. He’s kind, he’s loyal, he’s funny and he’s as strong as a damn ox, You got this Lucas and we are behind you and Nicole every step of the way.”
With a brain bleed and multiple fractures, Lucas continued “fighting for his life” in the ICU as his wife hoped he would survive. He needed risky brain surgery to reduce the swelling, and the prognosis for his recovery was uncertain. But three weeks after the incident, something miraculous happened to the couple.
Despite being sedated, Lucas woke up after 23 days in a coma. Doctors were confident that the young deputy was making great strides.
In a video update, Nicole said, “They removed the right part of his skull. He’s been pretty stable ever since It’s looking pretty positive if we can get through the next 48 hours.”
Lucas will undergo recovery and rehabilitation with his wife Nicole beside him, as soon as word of Lucas’ bravery spread, the entire country banded together to support the couple. The couple’s friend started a Go Fund Me, which within a few months raised just under $100,000.
“Currently they have intubated him and placed a central line in him as well as a ‘bolt,’ in his skull to help relive inner cranial pressure,” the GoFundMe page stated.
