Mom gives birth to four babies, then her doctor told her to give one of them up. But with more and more families, having twins, triplets, quadruplets and more also means an increase in resources to help them. We are still a young family with little babies.
Being away from each other for days is not easy. A woman who gave birth at the hospital has been slapped with a bill so huge that she had to leave two of her quadruplets and return home with the other two to raise money at birth.
We were premature, as most multiples are. All of us were under £5, while the youngest, who was the smallest brother, was incubated for two weeks.
We were famous as a local news item when 26 year old Virginia Adambo walked into Nairobi South Hospital on February 1, 2021 to deliver her four bundles of joy. But on the fourth day, she developed complications that forced her to undergo surgery after being born at seven months, the four brothers Michael, Jack, Teddy and Malik were kept in incubators as their mother continued to receive treatment. They had to add weight too. Currently one is at one 4 kg while the other one is at one 6 kg. However, one cannot leave the other behind. They have to stay together. But Mr Nadon refuted the claims by Dr Malin and said that his boys have been introduced to the bottle by Friday.
Last week I was asked to bring the feeding bottle last week, on Friday and the boys have been off the tube since then. Even on Tuesday, when I visited them, they were using the bottles to feed, Mr Nerdyn said. He added that he received a phone call from the hospital informing him that the babies had been discharged and he should visit the hospital and pick them up.

Matoni spent two months at the city hospital and her bill was 3 million shillings. At the time she was discharged on May 14, 2018, the bill had shot to 4 million shillings. In our teen years, we began to really individually, the tables turned, the boys went their separate ways and I was left to figure out what it meant to be a girl on my own. Multiples often suffer through identity crisis and we were no different. The two boys each had their own sets of friends and I had mine. I was known as the sister of the boys to my brother’s friends, which constituted my own kind of identity crisis tinged with sexism and isolation. Having a sister would have been a comfort at that time.
Let the baby learn differences between night and day during daytime, play with the baby, laugh and talk a lot. Surround baby with lots of sunlight and activities during daytime. Follow evening routine of giving calming bath and last feeding. Dim the lights during nighttime and keep it calm. Babies will eventually learn that night is for sleeping.
For a normal, healthy, full term pregnancy, your body knows what it’s doing. It really bothers me when doctors try to measure the baby’s size in utero. Those measurements are less than 80% accurate and are often used as a scare tactic to try to get women to be induced.
Because inductions can be scheduled and are easier for doctors, you wouldn’t believe the number of women I know have been told their baby is either too big or too small. Then after a difficult induction, end up having a perfectly normal sized baby.
