‘Murder on the Dancefloor’ is propelled onto the rankings by ‘Saltburn’, over two decades subsequent to its initial release. Club youth jubilate over its revival.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s disco-pop single “Murder on the Dancefloor” debuted at number 98 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the week of January 13, marking its first appearance on the chart since its 2001 debut.

The song, which was co-written by the British singer-songwriter and Gregg Alexander, experienced a meteoric rise in popularity subsequent to its inclusion in the concluding sequence of Saltburn, wherein Barry Keoghan’s character does muscular dancing to it. With the hashtag #MurderOnTheDanceFloor, it took off on social media when admirers, including Ellis-Bextor herself, imitated Keoghan’s moves through the Saltburn estate.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the tune had been featured on over 211,000 TikTok clips and over 160,000 Instagram Reels.

According to Billboard, “Murder on the Dancefloor” initially debuted at No. 26 on the U.S. Dance Club Songs chart in 2002. However, in the same year, it achieved a No. 2 position on the U.K. Singles Chart.

Ellis-Bextor, who authorized Saltburn director Emerald Fennell to incorporate the song, stated to the BBC that she had not anticipated the song to have such a profound impact on new admirers.

“It truly does feel quite magical.” She stated, “To be candid, I do not believe I have fully processed it at this time.” “The situation is extraordinary. I have been performing this tune for more than two decades. I continue to enjoy singing it. I adore the responses that individuals have when I perform it live. “However, it is somewhat lovely that it is creating new memories with people and that new people are discovering it.”
