Rumer Willis is a staunch advocate for online kindness.
After compiling a list of her must-have baby items for New York Magazine’s The Strategist last month, the 35-year-old received pushback on social media from individuals who believed her choices were too expensive for most new parents. And the level of hatred reached a point where Bruce Willis and Demi Moore’s oldest daughter felt compelled to speak out against it.
“Therefore, I would never ordinarily post what I just posted,” the House Bunny actress said on her Instagram Story on October 6, referring to a video she posted highlighting all the negative comments under the Strategist’s post. “But I felt inclined to just share because I was really taken aback at the level of negativity and just trolling.”
Rumer, who welcomed daughter Louetta with boyfriend Derek Richard earlier this year, acknowledged that she should be accustomed to trolls after years in the public view, but it does occasionally hurt her.
“I know I should just come to expect this because it’s just what people do and think it’s okay to just treat other people that way,” she elaborated. “Regardless of whether you like me or not or whether you believe I’ve accomplished anything in my life, I’m still a feeling human being. I am a sensitive person who would greatly appreciate it if you weren’t so rude and cruel to me.
How would Rumer like to be treated by her Instagram followers?
“Allow me the space,” she demanded, “to be a person who has worked, has done things, who has accomplished—in my opinion—certain things that I’m really proud of in my life and I’m still working and growing and trying to find what my zone of excellence is or what feels really good for me that I want to share.”
The new mother also reminded viewers that her intention in compiling the list was to simply post items that bring her pleasure and may bring joy to others.
Rumer concluded her message by informing her fans, “I just want this to serve as a reminder that despite the fact that you can label and refer to me as a nepotism baby or whatever, I’m still a person.”
