Since Kelly Clarkson was ‘unhappy’ in Los Angeles for years and needed a ‘fresh start,’ she relocated to New York City.

Season 5 of the hit chat show prompted the singer-turned-host to relocate from Los Angeles to New York City with her children.

Kelly Clarkson anticipated a fresh start.

The 41-year-old former singer-turned-talk show host made the decision to relocate to New York City with her children, daughter River Rose, 9, and son Remington Alexander, 7, whom she shares with ex-husband Brandon Blackstock, 47. This decision was made after she realized that her talk show could also be situated in the Big Apple.

“I had been extremely dissatisfied in Los Angeles for a number of years. “I required a new beginning,” she explains in the cover story of this week’s PEOPLE. “We stated to NBC, ‘I’m not attempting to be impolite; I simply cannot remain here any longer for the sake of my mental health and that of my children.'” “Likewise, they were not faring well.”

Over the last several years “I’d just been showing up and smiling and doing what I’m supposed to do,” she continues. “But you can only compartmentalize so long until you break.”
