Texas Supreme Court Outlaws Abortions Performed by Judges

A lower court order that permitted an abortion for a pregnant woman whose fetus was diagnosed with a fatal condition was overturned by the Texas Supreme Court on Monday. This decision came just hours after the woman’s attorneys stated that she had made the decision to leave Texas in order to undergo the procedure because of the state’s law prohibiting abortions, as reported by the New York Times.

“The court decided that the lower court made an error in deciding that the woman, Kate Cox, who is more than 20 weeks pregnant, was eligible for a medical exception,” the court said.

In a statement to the Texas Tribune, attorneys for Cox stated that she had left the state in order to undergo an abortion, but they did not provide any information regarding the location or time of the procedure.
