The ‘Back to Black’ biopic about Amy Winehouse is scheduled for release in spring 2024

The Amy Winehouse biopic “Back to Black” will be released in the United States by Focus Features on May 10, 2024, the studio announced on Tuesday.

Sam Taylor-Johnson directs “Back to Black” from a screenplay penned by Matt Greenhalgh, subsequent to their fruitful partnership on “Nowhere Boy” in 2009.

The documentary “Back to Black” focuses on the release of Winehouse’s groundbreaking studio album of the same name and her early ascent to fame. The film is an unabashed examination of the woman who initiated the phenomenon and the relationship that served as the inspiration for one of the most legendary albums in history, as told from her point of view.

Marisa Abela (“Industry”), Jack O’Connell (“Ferrari”), Eddie Marsan (“Fair Play”), and Lesley Manville (“Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris”) co-star in the film.

Producing are Alison Owen and Debra Hayward of Monumental Pictures. For Studio Canal, Nicky Kentish-Barnes co-executive produces with Joe Naftalin and Ron Halpern.

The film was produced with the complete backing of The Amy Winehouse Estate, Universal Music Group, and Sony Music Publishing.

It is widely acknowledged that Winehouse is one of the greatest vocalists of our time, having sold over 30 million records globally and generating over 80 million monthly streams at present. The critically acclaimed album “Back To Black” (2006) catapulted her to international renown, and she subsequently collected an unprecedented five Grammy Awards, including both Record of the Year and Song of the Year for the number-one single “Rehab.”

Universal Pictures International is tasked with the responsibility of distribution for the remaining regions worldwide. As previously declared, the film will be initially released in the United Kingdom and Poland on April 12. Subsequently, it will be released in Germany and the Netherlands on April 18, France on April 24, and New Zealand on April 25.
