As a result of an increase in the number of homicides in Dallas, some residents are requesting additional assistance from the police.
The encouraging news is that the overall rate of violent crime decreased by 8% in the year-end data of 2023, with a decline of nearly 19% in aggravated assault being the primary contributor.
At the meeting of the City Council Public Safety Committee that took place on December 11th, Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia discussed the trends as well as the concentrated deterrent plan that is now being implemented to reduce violent crime.
“The way you reduce murder is by reducing the incidents of aggravated assault that cause the murder, and the men and women of this police department are doing an incredible job,” Garcia said. “This is the way you reduce murder.”
There were 32 more homicides in Dallas in 2023, bringing the overall number of homicides to 246. This represents a 15% increase from the previous year’s 214 homicides.
