Traverse City Police Officer Goes Above and Beyond to Help Local Family

Traverse City, MI — Today at 1:30 p.m., Officer Adam Verschaeve of the Traverse City Police Department demonstrated compassion and generosity when he went above and beyond his duty during a routine traffic stop.

While on patrol, Officer Verschaeve noticed a child restraint violation and conducted a traffic stop. He discovered that the driver, a single mother, had her 6-year-old daughter in the car without a car seat. The officer learned that there was no car seat in the vehicle because the mother couldn’t afford one.

Understanding the safety risks involved, Officer Verschaeve asked the mother to park her vehicle. He then drove to a nearby Meijer and purchased a car seat for the child using his own money. After returning to the scene, Officer Verschaeve, who is a certified car seat technician with the department, installed the car seat and showed the mother how to properly secure it.

When asked about his generous act, Officer Verschaeve downplayed the gesture, stating that he simply felt it was the “right thing to do.” As a father himself, Officer Verschaeve understands the importance of child safety and took it upon himself to ensure the young girl would be secure on the road.

Officer Verschaeve has been with the Traverse City Police Department for nearly 12 years and is currently assigned to the day shift. His actions have been widely praised within the community, highlighting his dedication to serving and protecting others, even when off-duty.

The Traverse City Police Department expressed their pride in Officer Verschaeve’s actions, sharing the story on their social media and commending him for his commitment to the community. “Great work, Officer Verschaeve!” the department wrote, recognizing his selfless act.

This heartwarming story serves as a reminder of the everyday kindness shown by officers like Officer Verschaeve, who go above and beyond their call of duty to make a positive impact on the lives of those they serve.
