The People’s Choice Awards are growing, joining the already crowded field of award ceremonies for country music.
In September, NBCUniversal will launch the People’s Choice Country Awards. The first-ever People’s Choice Awards spinoff will be held at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and will air on NBC and Peacock. The People’s Choice brand is owned by NBCU, and last year the company invested shares in Opry Entertainment Group alongside the venture capital firm Atairos.
Cassandra Tryon, senior vp live events at NBCUniversal Television & Streaming, expressed her excitement about working with the Grand Ole Opry to deliver the biggest celebration of country music of the year to Nashville. “Country music enthusiasts are devoted to their genre, so there is no better location to organize this event than from country music’s biggest stage.”
Although there are various music categories on the People’s Choice Awards, including country artist of the year (Carrie Underwood won in 2022), movies and television have traditionally been the main focus.
The CMA Awards will be televised by ABC, the Academy of Country Music Awards will be available on Amazon Prime Video, and the CMT Music Awards will be broadcast on CBS and the program’s named cable network. The People’s Choice Country Awards will join these events. The two-hour program will include the typical assortment of winners chosen by country music fans, honorary prizes, plus live performances and collaborations.
Den of Thieves will produce the awards show, with Jesse Ignjatovic, Evan Prager and Barb Bialkowski executive producing.
